Upcoming talk: Low Cost Computing with Linux

On Saturday 14th May I will be giving a talk entitled Low Cost Computing with Linux at the Manchester Linux Users’ Group, hosted by MadLab.  The meeting starts at 2pm and runs until 5pm, although I promise I won’t be talking for that long (usually talks gradually move into a discussion).

The talk abstract is as follows:

Many people have been mistakenly quoted as saying that there was a world market for perhaps 5 computers. Now we’ve moved into an era where many of us have 5 computers each, and the relentless pace of falling prices is taking us to the point where we have more computing power than we could possibly use.

In this talk we’ll look at some of the options for low cost computing with Linux, including the Raspberry Pi and Creator CI20. We’ll talk about the specifications for each, the trade-offs they’ve made and the pros and cons of the different options. We’ll also discuss a development board which provides programmable hardware – until recently too expensive for hobbyists – for under £150.
